Rupestrian Church Hidden within Ronda's Cliffs: A Brief History of the

Hidden within the cliffs of Ronda, the Ermita Rupestre de la Oscuridad is a unique blend of history, architecture, and mystery. This church, a part of a larger set of structures known as Cultural Zone I, served as the home for a community of cenobites. The church forms a large central space, about ten by eight meters in size, with various internal apses and exits to the exterior, running along its longitudinal axis, east to west. On its northern side, there are three semi-circular, irregular cavities, which could have had a liturgical function.

The southern side offers wide accesses to the church, connecting it to the rest of the rupestral settlement from the outside. The community might have also lived in Cultural Zone II, formed by annexes A and B. The Cultural Zone III, formed by the necropolis, extends both inside and outside the church, creating a Christian necropolis where the small community attending the church and people from nearby Ronda would be buried.
