The Old Smith Hospital, nestled at the northern end of Express Street in Paris, Arkansas, was the brainchild of the two brothers, Dr. John James, affectionately known as 'Dr. Jim', and Dr. Arthur McDaniel, 'Dr. Mack'. They established the hospital in 1913, making it the first medical facility in the whole of Logan County. Initially, the hospital offered a unique first medical insurance plan but, due to financial constraints and escalating equipment costs, it unfortunately closed its doors in 1971. The original two-story brick structure was expanded with a three-story annex in 1926, which is reflected in the interior decor. As of now, the community has plans to renovate the building and convert it into a retirement home.
