Perched precariously on the rocky shores of Point Loma, California, the New Point Loma Lighthouse has been gracing the scene since 1891. Sitting 88 feet above the ocean, it took over from its fog-prone predecessor. The inaugural keeper was none other than Robert Decatur Israel, who had clocked in 18 years at the old one. The original light packed a punch, boasting 600,000 candlepower and detectable for approximately 15 nautical miles. Today, a two-tone fog horn has been swapped for the hum of automated efficiency, giving way to a Lovelight LED illumination in 1973 and an overall facelift in 2013. The New Point Loma Lighthouse, though not listed on the National Register of Historic Places, remains a cherished landmark, particularly among movie buffs who may recognize its living quarters from the 1986 film Top Gun, where Viper's pad (represented by Tom Skerritt) made an appearance.
