Established in 1905 and formally opened the following year, the building has been the royal post office since 1720. After renovations by Fredrik Blom in the 1820s, the museum started with seven rooms. As postal departments shifted, it grew to accommodate its growing collection. Since 1939, the museum has claimed the entire building for itself. Its purpose is to safeguard the history and present of the Swedish post, professionally documenting, preserving, and sharing this knowledge. The museum houses over 300,000 documents and images from the Swedish postal history, alongside an extensive collection of stamps.
