The Roaming Statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi: Tales from Monza, Italy

Fame and fortune, then a mysterious journey, and a return home - the story of Monza's Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument is no ordinary tale.

In Monza, Italy, the Monument dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of the Risorgimento, has seen more than just admiration. Commissioned in 1886 by the city council following Garibaldi's passing in 1882, renowned sculptor Ernesto Bazzaro was trusted with the task. Critics and artists alike celebrated the unveiling in Piazza Isola in 1886. In 1934, however, urban redevelopment necessitated a move to Boschetti Reali, where the statue would reside for almost 80 years. A restoration in 2013 saw its move back to Piazza Garibaldi, its original location. Yet another statue of the same man stands by the Olivetti Institute in Monza, adding intrigue to the legends surrounding Giuseppe Garibaldi's memorials in Monza.
