The manor where kings slept

The Maison du Roy in Casteljaloux, France, is a historic manor that attracts visitors not only for its architecture but for its royal connections. Built by Henri de La Tour d’Auvergne, a governor of the city in the 16th century, the house has hosted a succession of kings over the centuries. However, some details regarding the association with Henri IV are questionable, as no contemporary records indicate that he stayed there. Louis XIII stayed here in 1621, on his way to inspect his kingdom. Louis XIV visited the Maison du Roy in 1660, on his way to Saint-Jean-de-Luz for his Mexican marriage. Today, the Maison du Roy houses the local tourism office and is listed as a historic monument. When you visit, don’t be surprised if you feel a touch of royalty.
