Step into the heart of 1868 and feel the grandeur of what we now call 'the first governor’s home'. Alexander Ramsey, Minnesota Territory's first governor, shared this opulent dwelling with his family, a residence that is now a museum, showcasing the cutting-edge features of its era. The house was the work of Monroe Sheire, a renowned early Minnesota architect, featuring 19th-century luxury with carved walnut woodwork, marble fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, and original furnishings.
Alex and his family began constructing the house in 1868, incorporating groundbreaking innovations such as central heating systems, gas lighting, and running water. The house was completed in 1872 and cost a staggering 41,000 dollars. To fill its rooms, Anna, the governor's wife, filled two boxcars with Renaissance-revival furniture from the A.T. Company Store in New York, uniting the charm of the East with the West.
