Dearest Hoyt Sherman Place: A Timeless Tribute to a Legendary Life

Walk through the Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, IA, and be captivated by stories from a bygone era, woven into its grand Victorian structure.

Once upon a time, in 1877, on Woodland Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, a grand Victorian mansion blossomed – a gift to the visionary banker and politician Hoyt Sherman and his family, lovingly crafted by the skillful hands of Iowa architects Kraetsen Vorse & Kraetsch. This marvel of architecture, an instant beacon of opulence in Des Moines, was graced by the presence of luminaries such as Generals William Tecumseh Sherman, Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, and William McKinley.

Such proximity to greatness could not help but fill the air with grandeur and magic. Hoyt Sherman himself was a man of many talents, not only a politician and banker but the co-founder of the Equitable of Iowa Insurance Company, the Des Moines School System, and a major Army Paymaster during the Civil War. Even though Hoyt Sherman left us in 1904, his spirit continues to hover around the mansion that endures today. The Sisters of Mercy took residency in 1893 and founded the first Mercy Hospital.

Fast forward to 1995, when the Des Moines Women's Club acquired the house, and in 1977, it found its place on the National Register of Historic Places. As you tread through the beautifully preserved rooms of the Hoyt Sherman Place today, you can still feel the residual laughter, secret whispers, and prayers of the past that linger. Each corner, with its period-perfect furnishings, flooring, and decor, gleams with a charm that draws tourists from near and far.

From the music of Dwight Yoakam, Dave Chappelle, Martina McBride, and David Sedaris to the captivating tales concealed within its walls, the Hoyt Sherman Place promises an enchanting experience, leaving you spellbound.
