The Medici's Villa del Trebbio: From Castle to Modern Winery

Tracing the history of a 15th-century Medici fortress in Tuscany's Mugello region, now transformed into a vineyard. Learn about its past and the wines crafted today.

Perched in the San Piero a Sieve of Tuscany's Mugello region, Villa del Trebbio is steeped in history, originally a Medici family stronghold. In the 15th century, Michelozzo, architect to Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici, oversaw a remodel. Surrounded by a walled garden and boasting a central courtyard with a well, the villa expanded under Cosimo I de' Medici, Tuscany's Grand Duke, in the 16th century. Its final Medici owner, Ferdinand II, sold it to the well-heeled Florentine, Giuliano Serragli, in 1644 who bequeathed it to the Oratorians. The 20th-century saw further property expansion, and today, the villa serves as a winery. The proprietor produces premium wines, offering tastings in both English and Italian.
