The Ioannovsky Gate is a gate in the Ioannovsky ravelin of the Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg. It provides passage from the Ioannovsky Bridge into the fortress through the Petrovsky Gate.
The Ioannovsky Gate was constructed between 1738 and 1740 based on a design by military engineer B. K. von Minikh, built under the supervision of H. De Marin, and named after Tsar Ivan V, the father of Empress Anna Ioannovna, during whose reign the gate was erected. Above the gate opening is the date "1740," indicating the completion time of all the works on the stone Peter and Paul Fortress. The Ioannovsky Gate was the final object in the fortress's reconstruction in stone. In the tympanum of the gate is a cartouche crowned with the imperial crown, surrounded by military attributes — banners, halberds, drums.
In the design of the ceremonial (eastern) facade of this structure, the decorative treatment experience of the lower tier of the Petrovsky Gate (two pairs of columns) was used. Slightly later, a similar composition was used in the construction of the Nevsky Gate. The inner facade of the gate was treated with rustication and decorated with rosettes in 1829.
In the 1960s, architects I. N. Benois and A. L. Rotach carried out the restoration of the Ioannovsky Gate.
