The Freedom Gate, built in 1994, stands 8 meters tall in Djurgården, southern Stockholm. It is a memorial to the Estonians and Estonian roots people who found refuge in Sweden. The gate was designed by Matti Varik and made of granite. The inscriptions on the gate read 'FREEDOM GATE FOR ESTONIANS AND ESTONIAN ROOTS PEOPLE TO THE MEMORY OF SWEDEN'S PEOPLE ANNO 1994' and 'RISE UP FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS OVER THE SEA'. The gate was opened by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden on October 7, 1994. It is dedicated to the memory of Estonians and Estonian roots people by the Swedes from 1944 to 1994.
