The bronze statue born from a Bacchus head

Bellmansbysten, a bronze statue by Johan Niclas Byström, was unveiled on July 26, 1829. The statue, located on Djurgården in Stockholm, was created to commemorate the famous singer Carl Michael Bellman. Byström was inspired by Johan Tobias Sergel's medaljong and Per Krafft d.ä.'s portrait of the musician. The statue stands on a granite pedestal with the name Carl Michael Bellman and a lyre inscribed on it. Byström was successful in portraiture and the statue demonstrates Bellman's worthiness as a student of Sergel, with a pose reminiscent of the Roman god of wine, Dionysus. The unveiling of the statue drew a large crowd, with Kung Karl XIV Johan and his royal family present. The event was celebrated annually since as Bellmansdagen.
