Unfinished and Abandoned: The Silent Testimony of Sankta Katarina Kyrkoruin

Sankta Katarina kyrkoruin, also known as Sankta Karin kyrkoruin, is an incomplete church located in Visby, Sweden. Built by the Franciscan order in 1233, the church was dedicated to several protective saints, including St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Francis, St. Ludvig, St. Clara, and St. Antonius. Initially, the church was a single-nave building, but construction continued with a planned addition of a new choir. However, the construction was halted around the mid-1300s, possibly due to the Danish conquest of Gotland in 1361. The church remained incomplete for centuries. The east side of the church was home to a heating system, or hypocaust. Today, Sankta Katarina ruins have been used for cultural events such as concerts and theater performances.
