From School to Masterpiece: The Evolution of Visby's Art Museum

The Gotland Art Museum, nestled in Visby, offers a captivating history. Initially constructed in 1847-1848, it began as the first folk school in Visby. After serving as a small school, it became a gymnasium. Jan Brunius oversaw its transformation into a museum in 1988, as part of Gotlands museum. Its collections span from the early 1800s to the present day. Contrary to initial plans, the building was never designed specifically for art. Despite a temporary closure in 2019, it has since reopened its doors.
