Fort Altena: Swedish Settlement in New Lands, 1638

Fort Altena: First Swedish territory in North America, but the Swedes met more than ripe Dutch.

In 1638, Fort Altena, also known as Fort Altena, marked the debut of Swedish territory in North America. Part of New Sweden settlement, this fort snuggled just east of current-day downtown Wilmington, Delaware. It sat where the Brandywine and Christina Rivers met, about 2 miles upstream from the Christina's mouth on the Delaware River. Named in tribute to Queen Christina of Sweden, the fort endured tensions with its Dutch neighbors.
