Washington and the Revolution's Paychecks

General Washington did not solo-fund the Revolution. This bronze squad honors the guys who actually paid the bills.

General George Washington stands there looking important alongside Robert Morris and Haym Salomon. These two were the primary financiers who prevented the American Revolution from hitting a total bankruptcy wall.

Lorado Taft initiated the heavy lifting on this bronze sculpture before he decided to kick the bucket in 1936. After his expiration, his associates Leonard Crunelle, Nellie Walker, and Fred Torrey took over the unfinished mission.

The monument holds its ground in Chicago's Loop within the Michigan-Wacker Historic District. It occupies Heald Square, a name inherited from Captain Nathan Heald, who commanded Fort Dearborn in the early 1810s.
