The Dighton Rock, a 40-ton gray-brown behemoth, boasts baffling etchings that have baffled all attempts at decryption. This enigma dates back to before 1680 and has been a bewilderment ever since. Numerous theories have been floated, but the general consensus currently leans towards Algonquian Native American origins. In 1680, Puritan preacher Reverend John Danforth immortalized the carvings. These engravings are on display at the British Museum. In 1690, another Puritan minister, Reverend Cotton Mather, documented the rock in his book, *The Wonderful Works of God Commemorated*. In 1963, authorities transferred the boulder for preservation; it now rests at Dighton Rock State Park, where exhibits present each theory. The Dighton Rock was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
