Born on the 27th of August, 1941, in the captivating town of Mindelo, São Vicente - a part of the Portuguese Cape Verde, Cesária Évora, the Barefoot Singer of Morna, was cherished by her mother Joana, a cook and maid, and her violinist father Justino, whose spirit she longed for. Raised by her grandmother amidst abiding poverty, she sought solace in the art of music. At sixteen, the Barefoot Singer dared to perform morna and coladeira in the bars of Mindelo, marking the beginning of her musical journey.
Her hometown, enchanted as it was with the allure of an international port city, gave her the opportunities that led her to become the headliner at Mindelo's Café Royal. Yet, it was only after 1985, when she reconnected with Portugal, that her music truly flourished. The chance encounter resulted in her contributing to a women's music anthology album, which brought her to the attention of music producer José 'Djô' da Silva, who signed her to his label Lusafrica.
In the year 1988, her debut album, La Diva Aux Pieds Nus, was born, but it was her fourth and fifth albums, Miss Perfumado (1992) and Cesária (1995), that captured the hearts of the world. Her haunting voice sang tales of love, homesickness, nostalgia, and the stories of Cape Verdean people. She was known for her habit of performing barefoot, and her fondness for a puff of smoke between performances. Her music received many accolades, including a Grammy Award in 2004.
She inspired countless musicians of the Cape Verde diaspora and even the American pop singer Madonna. To the people of Cape Verde, she was known as the Queen of Morna or Cize. In the late 2000s, she faced health issues and departed this world on the 17th of December, 2011, leaving behind a legacy that continues to enchant the world.
