Fort Bullen: A UNESCO World Heritage site at the mouth of the Gambia River

Fort Bullen is a UNESCO World Heritage site and historic fort built in 1826 at the mouth of the Gambia River.

Fort Bullen is a historic fort located at the mouth of the Gambia River at Barra Point, near the city of Barra. It was built in 1826 by Commodore Charles Bullen. The construction was intended to cover the five-kilometer-wide river mouth because the guns on the south side in Bathurst (now Banjul) could not cover it alone. This was done to prevent French and Portuguese traders from accessing the interior of the country from the hinterland after the British Empire banned the slave trade in 1807.
