The Reconstruction of Garachico's Church of Santa Ana

Originally built in 1520, this historic church was rebuilt after a major volcanic eruption and remains a cultural landmark of Tenerife.

The Church of Santa Ana is the main church in Garachico, Tenerife, situated next to the Plaza de la Libertad. Originally constructed around 1520 by Cristobal de Ponte, the founder of Garachico, the church was named after his wife, Ana de Vergara. Construction on the chancel began by 1532 and was completed by 1542.

The building suffered severe damage during the Eruption of Trevejo in 1706. It was subsequently rebuilt between 1714 and 1721 with new walls and roofs, following the original plans. The structure underwent further restoration in the 1990s and again in 2010 for its sculptures. A major restoration of the tower began in 2014, involving repairs to the wooden structure, stonework, and electrical cabling, before the church reopened in 2016.

The facade of the church features a combination of Plateresque and Renaissance architectural elements. Inside, the space is divided into three parts by a series of arches and columns. The interior houses various altars, some in the Baroque style, alongside a museum of sacred art. Notable items include a 17th-century marble baptismal font and an image of Christ of Mercy from Mexico, which was crafted using corn marrow.
