The Santísimo Cristo del Calvario at Ermita del Calvario

In Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife, the Ermita del Calvario stands as a protected monument housing a sacred image from Cuba.

In the hilltop town of Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife, the Ermita del Calvario stands as a serene sanctuary. Accessed by a stone-step pathway, the site is delimited by a grille and a wall with pillars topped by spheres. Inside, garden areas feature large laurels of the Indies. The sanctuary houses the image of the Santísimo Cristo del Calvario, which was carved in La Habana, Cuba, and arrived in Icod in 1729. It has been a protected monument since 2006.

The chapel consists of a single nave with a two-sided wooden roof and a simple facade featuring a cement bell-gable. To the right of the building, a characteristic Calvary features three wooden crosses. The main entrance is a stone archway with two glazed doors. Inside, the ceiling is an artesonado de par y nudillo with a geometric mudéjar-style decoration. The main altarpiece is a single body with a central niche flanked by Tuscan pilasters, which houses the image of the Crucified of Icod.

Adjacent to the chapel is a sacristy that leads to a side courtyard. From this patio, a staircase provides access to the bell-gable, which has a simple wooden balcony. The courtyard contains a stone baptismal font carved with acanthus leaves. At the rear of the property, there is a fountain with a stone basin and a cobblestone pavement.
