In the shade of towering Baroque splendor dwells the ancient Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís, once a peaceful Franciscan convent. Transformed through time, it now stands as the second most revered house of worship in the bewitching City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, following the Church of the Conception. Erected in 1680, this enchanting edifice boasts one of the finest illustrations of Baroque design in the Canary Islands. Yet, it is not its grandeur that sets the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís apart from the rest.
Instead, the mystic Señor de las Tribulaciones, a protecting image, resides within these hallowed walls. The most exceptional evidence of this enchanting guardianship dates back to 1893, when a cholera outbreak threatened the city. Fueled by resolute determination, the citizens assembled, bearing this very image, in a grand procession through the city streets. Their tearful prayers were answered, for the pestilence subsided. From that day forth, the Señor de las Tribulaciones is adored as the protective spirit of the city, affectionately called the Señor de Santa Cruz.
Despite its simple appearance, the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís brims with tales and secrets, making it an unmissable enchanting destination in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
