The mudbrick core of Senusret III's pyramid

A king of the Middle Kingdom sought a house of white stone to shield his final rest, but time stripped the skin from his monument.

The pyramid of Senusret III is an ancient Egyptian pyramid located at Dahshur and built for pharaoh Senusret III of the 12th Dynasty. It was erected on leveled ground and composed of a mudbricks core covered with a casing of white Tura limestone blocks resting on foundations. The pyramid is the northernmost among those of Dahshur, standing around 1.5 km northeast of Sneferu's Red Pyramid.

Pharaoh Senusret III built this house for his own end. He surrounded his resting place with an enclosure wall, a northern chapel, and a small eastern mortuary temple. Outside this enclosure were seven tombs belonging to Senusret's queens and princesses. In the shadows of his main pyramid, archaeologists found the intricated rock-cut hypogea of royal women, where explorers discovered treasures including famous pectorals and sarcophagi.

In 1894, Jacques de Morgan reached the burial chamber after discovering a tunnel dug by ancient tomb robbers. He found a granite chamber with walls whitened with gypsum and three relieving vaults made from granite, limestone, and mudbricks meant to discharge the weight on the underlying chamber's walls. The granite sarcophagus was empty, and it is possible that Senusret III was never buried there, perhaps preferring his Abydene tomb as his final resting place, as suggested by the lack of a blocking system within this hypogeum.

Today, the site sits in the sands of Dahshur. Visitors can see the ruins of the temples and the graves of the royal women. The complex includes the remains of six sacred barques and the foundations of a southern temple, which featured a colonnaded courtyard and an inner shrine.
