Erie, PA, a city founded in 1795, has played a peculiar role in the international community. Since the 1990s, it has welcomed refugees from diverse parts of the world - Bosnians, Sudanese, and many others from Eritrea, Ghana, Iraq, Kosovo, Liberia, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, Somalia, Sudan, the former Soviet Union, and Vietnam. The International Institute of Erie (IIE), established in 1919, has been instrumental in resettling these refugees. As of 2000, Erie's population was 103,717, with a density of 1,823.6 km2. Today, Erie remains a beacon of hope for the displaced.
