In 1903, the Buffalo North Breakwater East end Light popped up, adorned with a sixth order Fresnel lens in 1904. The lighthouse, made from boiler-plate cast iron shaped like a bottle, stood 29 feet high. Though the lens was set in 1904, the light began to pulse in 1903. The lighthouse was automated in 1960 and switched off in 1985, but its stone-filled base remains. More than a beacon, it was a breadwinner for Buffalo's folks. But its glow was eventually replaced by something shinier.
