The château that hosts America's independence

The Château de la Chaussade, a 1743 construction by Baron Pierre Babaud de la Chaussade, sits on the commune of Guerigny in the Nièvre department. This monumental French chateau was the venue for the inauguration of the Place of the Independence of the United States on September 5, 2021. The grounds around the chateau served as the French navy's production site for chains and anchors for nearly two centuries (18th to mid-20th century), supplying both French and commercial vessels. Now, the property, including the chateau and its surrounding parks, is owned by the city of Guerigny, with a large-scale restoration program having been initiated. The chateau and its grounds are open to the public. Despite the considerable restoration, the chateau remains an historical site, a testament to 18th-century French architecture and lifestyle.
