In the 14th century, Bergamo was embroiled in a sibling rivalry between Guelf and Ghibelline factions. The city came under the reign of King John of Luxembourg in 1331. Construction on Rocca di Bergamo, possibly built on the foundations of a Roman fort, started in the same year, overseen by Guglielmo of Castelbarco, vicar of the king. The Visconti furthered and completed the work begun during the brief tenure of John of Luxembourg. Azzone Visconti finalized the work on the Rocca in 1336, enhancing its defensive capabilities against external and internal threats. A plaque was placed on the walls of the Rocca in 1345 by the podestà Negro Pirovano. Rocca di Bergamo is situated atop the city hill of Sant'Eufemia. The Rocca di Bergamo Museum is part of the ‘Museo delle Storie di Bergamo’ network.
