The Bicentennial Liberty Bell away from home

A replica of the Liberty Bell, cast 200 years after the original, toured the country and ended up in Washington, D.C. On Union Station's square today, it's a symbol of the Bicentennial celebration, and an oddity near the capital.

The Freedom Bell, a 2:1 scale replica of the Liberty Bell, was cast by Petit & Fritsen in 1975 and dedicated on July 22, 1981. It was presented by the American Legion as a Bicentennial gift to the United States and shared train car No. 41 during its 21-month journey across all 48 contiguous states aboard the American Freedom Train. Inscriptions on the bell closely mirrored those of the original Liberty Bell, including the biblical quote from Leviticus 25:10 - ’Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof’ - encircling the upper portion.
