This poignant tribute, dedicated in 1991 by General Dick Thornburgh, was originally dreamt up by Detective Donald Guilfoil of the Suffolk County Police Department. The memorial, a stone's throw from the National Law Enforcement Museum, showcases the lives of around 23,229 American cops, detectives, and rangers, lost in the line of duty. Designed by Davis Buckley, each side of the square houses two stone slabs and four fierce bronze lions, sculpted by Raymond Kaskey, with cub sculptures by George Carr.
Each lion bears an fittingly profound quote, adding a different dimension to this memorial. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), formed by 16 national organizations, takes care of maintenance and upkeep of the memorial. The NLEOMF also includes the National Troopers Coalition, the Fraternal Order of Police, the National Conference of Black Police Officers, the FBI National Academy Associates, and the International Conference of Police Chaplains.
