The Honoring Eagle: A Misinterpreted Swedish Monument (Flygarmonumentet)

The Honoring Eagle, or Flygarmonumentet, is a sculpture in central Stockholm, unveiled in 1931. Designed by Carl Milles, it was a gift from the Swedish Aeronautical Society, with the intention of honoring Swedish pilots who died in the North Pole expedition of 1898 and the aviator era of 1917. The eagle-shaped statue, however, resembles the Nazi Eagle symbol, but this was not its original purpose. In the 1940s, young Swedish Nazis used the statue as a meeting point, but this is a separate matter from the statue's intent. The statue was temporarily removed during the construction of the Karlaplan metro station and was re-erected again in 1967.
