For more than two decades, the comfy Charleston Sofa Super Store was as cozy as grandma's beloved armchair. But on a hot June 18th in 2007, a fire of epic proportions struck where the Super Loadin' Dock used to be. It was as if an invisible prankster set it ablaze, leaving no trace. The flames spun a deadly dance, headed straight for the main HQ, turning the warehouse into nothing but ashes and leaving the building to crumble under the unrelenting heat.
That fateful Monday night, nine heroic firefighters tried wrestling those unruly flames but they met an unfortunate end when the building and their attempts were all but consumed by the flaming inferno. The iffy water supply, traffic gridlock on Savannah Highway, and the glaring absence of sprinklers fueled the inferno, making it the deadliest year for US firefighters since the attacks on 9/11. After the sorrowful event, the site took some time off to grieve, but a quiet, yet eloquent commemorative plaque was eventually erected on the desolate grounds in memory of the 2007 fire in Charleston, SC.
Today, that weathered plaque stands like a sentinel, serving as a grim reminder of the tragic Charleston Sofa Supershow of 2007.
