69' Charleston Hospital Strike: SC's Final Breath

In March '69, a dozen African American hospital workers in South Carolina were fired for speaking out about their unfair treatment.

On March 19, 1969, in Charleston, South Carolina, Mary Moultrie, of Local 1199B - the local health care workers' union chapter - led the 69' Charleston Hospital Strike. It was one of the last efforts of the Civil Rights movement in South Carolina and one of the first since Martin Luther King Jr.'s death. These workers protested the open discrimination they faced daily at the hospital. They labored, day in, day out.
