By 1894, the ocean was roughly 300 feet away, devouring the coastline at a pace of 37 feet annually. With a touch of black humor, authorities repositioned the third lighthouse three-quarters of a mile inland. Forged from cast iron and steel, it towered over all Virginia lighthouses at the onset. However, much like a poorly penned drama, it delivered an unforeseen departure.
