May 15, 1853, the Swedish Riksdag decided to establish a telegraph network. The first telegraph pole was strategically located in Märsta, midway between Stockholm and Uppsala.
The choice of Marsta as the starting point for the telegraph network was due to its excellent location, roughly half-way between Stockholm and Uppsala. From here, the network was simultaneously built towards both cities.
A century later, in October 1953, a Memorial was inaugurated at the original telegraph pole's location, taking the form of a bronze telegraph pole. According to TeleKulturHistoriska Veteranföreningen, the Memorial is also a tribute to the Swedish line worker, who, with hard work and often under harsh conditions, contributed to the building of the telecommunications network that Sweden has today.
Along Monument Way, where it crosses Station Street, you'll find the Memorial amidst the greenery.
