August Strindberg's Blue Tower: A Peek Through His Looking Glass

The Strindberg Museum is in Stockholm, Sweden, devoted to the life and works of the celebrated playwright and author August Strindberg (1849-1912). Situated in Strindberg's last residence, popularly known as 'Blå tornet' (Blue Tower), the museum offers an enchanting peek into the life and writings of one of Sweden's pre-eminent cultural personalities. Managed by the Strindberg Society of Sweden, the City of Stockholm, and the Nordic Museum, the museum was inaugurated in 1973.

The Blue Tower, designed by the architectural firm Hagström & Ekman in 1906-1907, accommodates the museum. Strindberg moved into the fourth-floor apartment in 1908 and lived there until his demise in 1912. The museum encompasses Strindberg's apartment and library, in addition to temporary exhibition spaces. The refurbished apartment, mirroring its original appearance during Strindberg's stay, showcases many of his original fittings such as chairs, tables, bed, and piano. Strindberg's personal library, comprising around 3,000 books, can be found on the museum's sixth floor.
