The stones of Chicago's Vietnam Veterans Memorial moved from Wacker Drive

This tribute to the past literally carried a piece of its former home into a new space.

If you find yourself wandering through Chicago, you will eventually run into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is a solemn spot featuring a heavy stone wall and a rectangular fountain basin. The wall is inscribed with the names of those who died during the Vietnam War.

This location was not the original home for the tribute. The memorial first sat on Wacker Drive starting back in 1982. When the city moved the memorial to the current spot in 2005, they took the inscribed stones from the Wacker Drive site and incorporated them into the plaza of the new memorial.

Gary Tillery was the Vietnam veteran who created the sculpture. The memorial is dedicated to veterans from all branches of the armed services who served in Vietnam.
