The Lone Sailor: A Bronze Tribute alongside the Pacific

In Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, you'll find the Lone Sailor, a seven-and-a-half-foot-tall bronze statue dedicated to the sea services, standing tall with an outstretched gaze towards the USS Arizona Memorial.

Created by artist Stanley Bleifeld, this sea-faring sentinel pays homage to servicemen and women from the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. The sculpture's sea bag by its side is a symbol of each sailor's global readiness to safeguard America's interests. The statue was designed with the initials and surname of Rear Admiral William Thompson, the inaugural president and CEO of the Navy Memorial Foundation, lingering on the sea bag.

The Lone Sailor's likeness was inspired by Petty Officer First Class Dan Maloney, who served aboard the USS Alabama. This majestic mariner was cast using bronze infused with artifacts from eight U.S. Navy vessels. In the present day, replicas of the Lone Sailor can be found in thirteen locations across the United States, as well as in Normandy, outside the U.S. in Utah Beach. The Lone Sailor positioned in Pearl Harbor was dedicated on October 13, 2017, during the Navy's 242nd birthday.
