The Bay's Kooky Symphony: The Wave Organ in San Fran

Skootle on over to San Francisco, California, and groove to the Wave Organ, a funky musical sculpture in the Bay that gets its groove on with the rhythm of the tides. It's a symphony of sound, not just another art-freak oddity!

A weird and wonderful creation, the Wave Organ has been pulling stakes at the end of a peninsula near the Golden Gate Yacht Club since May 1986. Peter Richards, an artist with a zany sense, came up with this buzzy installation that dances with the waves of San Francisco Bay with the help of 25 PVC pipes. When the tides are high, guests can soak up the intriguing, bass-heavy performance. So, let's stop calling it a worthless piece of art, eh? After all, the stones in the Wave Organ were pulled from the rubble of the demolished Laurel Hill Cemetery in San Francisco. And while Old Man Frank Oppenheimer wasn't around for the construction by seven months, the Wave Organ was still dedicated to him, thanks to his tireless efforts to get it funded.
