Porte des Anglais - a medieval gate in ruins

The Porte des Anglais in Naucelle is an ancient, medieval city gate that serves as a remnant of the old fortifications of the town. It is a notable sight, with its vaulted arcade allowing passage between the upper city and the exterior quarters. The structure's architecture reflects the medieval defensive style of the Rouergue region. Located on the commune of Naucelle, in the Aveyron department, France, the Porte des Anglais played a part in the medieval defense system of the town, controlling entry during the Middle Ages. The gate is preserved as a local architectural heritage witness and was inscribed as a monument historique in 1978. Although centuries have passed, the Porte des Anglais remains standing, albeit in ruins. The inner passage is forbidden, while the outdoor area, with its tainted well from historic vines, is left untouched.
