The Porte des Anglais, a 13th-century relic of a city gate in the French commune of Sore, showcases intriguing details that tell a story worth retelling. Constructed in the Garluche style, this monument features an early Christian symbol on its keystone: a chrisme. The Porte des Anglais is the last remaining piece of the city’s fortifications, dating back to the time of the seigneurs of Albret. Investigations suggest that this noble family undertook a significant renovation campaign for the region around 1270-1280, including the construction of the Porte des Anglais. Interestingly, two other gates of a similar type once stood in Sore, but they have since disappeared.
