Palazzo Balbi Giacomo e Pantaleo

Palazzo Balbi Giacomo e Pantaleo

Discover the hidden grandeur of this 17th-century palace in Genoa, originally built for two wealthy brothers and now a hub for the humanities at the University of Genoa.

The Palazzo Balbi Giacomo e Pantaleo, located in via Balbi 4, Genoa, is one of the 42 Palazzi dei Rolli selected as UNESCO World Heritage in 2006. Designed in the 1620s for two equal and separate apartments for the brothers Giacomo and Pantaleo Balbi, it was designed by Bartolomeo Bianco, one of the architects of Genoese Baroque architecture. Bartolomeo Bianco did not join the houses together, a medieval solution still present in the Palazzo Cipriano Pallavicini of piazza Fossatello. Instead, the two apartments were placed one above the other, using the entire plot area, as can be seen in the incisions made by Rubens for the Palazzi of Genoa. This unique structure changed the arrangement of mezzanines, which were originally destined to be rented.
