The Liwa Wilayat in the North Al Batinah Governorate is famous for its important historical landmark - Liwa Fort, which is located about one and a half kilometers from the center of the wilayat and enjoys a strategic geographical position on the seashore. The fort was built more than 400 years ago and was used as a fortress for defense, as well as a residence for the wali and a place for discussing and managing wilayat affairs.

The fort consists of a high wall and 5 watchtowers, in addition to the main entrance, locally known as “Al-Sabah.” The “Kasbah,” which is the tallest building in the fort, consists of three floors, five rooms, and two halls, in addition to the main entrance, which locals call “Sabah,” and two chambers—one intended for the well, its drilling and cleaning, and the other for bathing. The Al-Kasbah was used to accommodate the Wali and his family, and besides its main function, due to its height, it was used for observation. Here is the majlis (guest room), formerly known as “Al-Sablah.”

Additionally, the fort has three wells scattered in different locations, which were used in the past for various purposes, including cooking and irrigation.

The fort is surrounded by houses and date palms. From the fort’s towers, many surrounding villages can be seen, such as the coastal village of Harmul and the famous mangrove forests.
