The city and fort of Ar Rustaq are among the most famous historical landmarks of Oman. The city originated in the pre-Islamic era of the Sasanian Empire, when almost the entire Middle East was controlled by the Persians. It is believed that the Ar Rustaq fort was built in the 17th century by Imam Nasir ibn Murshid of the Yaruba dynasty. He chose the city as the new capital and residence for his dynasty. This was the best decision: its location exactly between the northern coast and the interior of Oman allowed the imams to control both land and sea simultaneously. Even after the fall of the Murshid dynasty 125 years later, in the early years of Al Said’s rule, Ar Rustaq remained the capital of the state.
Built four centuries before his death in the 7th century AD, the Rustaq fortress is an impressive structure built on three levels and includes a separate house, an armory, a mosque, and four towers. The tallest tower is over 18.5 meters high and 6 meters in diameter.
Besides its unique history, Ar Rustaq fort is recognizable for its architecture featuring carved wood, as well as its historic mosque and towers. The fortress has used aflaj irrigation systems for centuries, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Additionally, the fort grounds contain the tombs of Imam Nasir and his successor Saif ibn Sultan.
