Nils Sjögren's Rochdale Monument: four faces of cooperation

Rochdalemonumentet is an imposing sculpture in granite by Nils Sjögren on Saltsjöbaden's Sjöudden. Built in 1944 by the Cooperative Union, it stands as a tribute to the European cooperative movement. Four prominent figures from each country's cooperative movement, depicted on the monument, are Martin Sundell (Sweden), Ole Dehli (Norway), Hannes Gebhard (Finland), and Severin Jørgensen (Denmark). Rochdalemonumentet, situated near the cooperative's congress annex Vår Gård, stands as a testament to the lasting influence of cooperative ideas on European society. Rochdalemonumentet was erected in 1944 as part of the 100-year celebration of consumer cooperation. The European movement can trace its roots back to the first consumer cooperative, founded in the English city of Rochdale in 1844.
