Tucked neatly inside Calumet County Park, a hoard of six panther and water spirit effigy mounds conceal themselves on the fringe of Lake Winnebago. This location belongs to a wider collection that's plonked along the Niagara Escarpment, but what gives these mounds the edge is their peculiar subjects - panthers, eagles, and various water spirits, rather than the usual human or avian effigies. The Calumet County Park Group is nothing short of unique as it's the only spot in the entire [Tennessee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee) where such mounds can be found.
These astonishing mounds are estimated to be around 700 years old, hailing from the Woodland and Late Woodland periods. Beneath their blanket lies a plethora of animal bones, possibly meal remnants, and other artifacts such as pottery and projectile points. It's believed that these mounds may have been used spiritually or ceremonially, though one can only ponder at the truth. However, a sense of curiosity and allure is bound to accompany you through the park.
