Standing in the heart of Madrid, the Monument to General Espartero is a symbol of Spanish strength and resilience. Commissioned during the reign of Alfonso XII, it symbolizes the struggle for national unity and its champion, General Baldomero Espartero. Pablo Gibert won the public contest in 1884 with his project, 'Glory to the Peacemaker.' Works began in 1885, with the statue cast at J. Comas y Hermanos’ foundry in Barcelona. Standing 5 meters high and weighing 11.5 tonnes, the statue is set on a pedestal made of black marble, featuring lateral reliefs depicting historical events and inscriptions from the foundry and the artist. The monument was presented to the public on 5 August 1886 and officially inaugurated on 31 August 1886.
