Deep within El Retiro, Madrid, you'll find the Monument to General Martínez Campos, a mesmerizing masterpiece. Created by Mariano Benlliure, this monument stands tall with an equestrian statue of General Arsenio Martínez Campos, who played a significant role in the Bourbon Restoration, most notably the coup d'etat of Sagunto in 1874. The statue is made of polished bronze, atop a rugged limestone base, creating a captivating crag. Opportunities abound for exploration within the monument's perimeter, where a bronze war trophy is displayed, adorned with flags and other battle relics, as well an engraved homage, 'al general martínez campos, modelo de patriotas y soldados, España'.
The limestone base also bears inscriptions on the right and back, memorializing key military victories. This monument was forged through a public subscription initiated by the Marquis of Cabriñana in 1904, and was officially recognized as Bien de Interés Cultural by the Council of Government of the Community of Madrid in 2013.
