Longest Pier in California: The Lenny of Wharfs

From 1894 to early 20th century, Santa Monica's star attraction, Long Wharf, reigned as the longest, serving as a bustling freight and passenger hub. Alas, its demolition came due to stormy troubles and an unquenchable thirst for a secure harbor.

The Southern Pacific Railroad Company's Long Wharf, built by Collis P. Huntington from 1892 to 1894, stretching an impressive 4,700 feet (1,400 m), took the crown as the longest pier. Its main role was to strengthen Santa Monica's claim as Los Angeles's principal port. Fast-forward to today, its legacy remains as California Historical Landmark No. 881, a silent testimonial to the cutthroat infrastructure competition of the early 20th century, and the shaping of Greater Los Angeles.
