East Hartford's Past, Present, and a Few Uninvited Guests

In East Hartford, Connecticut, the old Yankees just won't stop haunting their old stomping grounds, like the Central Avenue-Center Cemetery Historic District.

Established in the 17th century, the Central Avenue-Center Cemetery Historic District is a spooky and nostalgic site. It was the first burial ground for the colonial town, housing the spirits of William Pitkin, a colonial governor, and American Revolutionary War veterans. Although Main Street was revamped post World War II, a piece near Central Avenue and the houses along that street and the adjoining cemetery serve as a stark reminder of the town's past. The historic district includes the East Hartford Public Library, a Romanesque beauty built in 1889, and Central Avenue, lined with 19th-century and early 20th-century houses, many in the Italianate and Queen Anne styles.
