In the 1840s, Samuel Colt, a precision manufacturing and firearms kingpin, akin to a modern-day robber baron, claimed a vast piece of land in the gloomy town of Hartford, Connecticut. His eyes sparked with dreams in London in 1851, and without blinking, he plunged into a real estate binge, erecting the Colt Armory and a drab workers' village. These remnants of his creation entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and in 2008, they secured a morbid National Historic Landmark title.
